HELP ME I'M A DISCO BALL!!!!!

I'm sure that we all at one point or another, after spending many hours perfecting our face, making sure everything is on point, has looked in the mirror and been horrified by the shiny and oily mess that closely resembles a human disco ball. There are a few things that cause this and a few other steps we can take to make sure it doesn't happen or at least minimize the amount of shine we get.

First things first let’s discuss why we get the "disco ball" effect. The most common reason why we get this is our skin has this giant meeting and decides that there should be a build up of oil on our skin. Now usually without makeup this isn't a disaster but because all that oil is trapped underneath foundation it can make your skin appear all greasy and just generally yuck. The effect can be worsened and sped up if you use illuminating primers and very dewy foundations. This build up of oil combined with the oil just does not look hot.

So the first step to minimizing the appearance shine throughout the day, especially if you have oily skin, is to use a matte (non-dewy) foundation. Now this will not reduce the actual shine but will help delay the onset of the shine appearing on your skin.

Another even more basic step is to use an oil-controlling primer or lotion underneath your foundation. MAC does an oil-control lotion and also the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer is very good at helping control your oil production.

If you are prone to getting shiny make sure you set your foundation with a powder! Even if you don't like that over powdered look, at least powder down the T-Zone as this is where shine is generally unwanted and considered not beautiful. You can leave the rest of your face free of powder but at least powder this region of your face.

A final step, which is a new step for me is using and oil control setting spray. Urban Decay do a De-Slick makeup setting spray which is supposed to set your foundation down and also help keep any oil and shine at bay.

Now let me just say even if you take all these steps you may find you are still getting a little bit of shine throughout the day. This is because it is your body’s natural way of producing moisture for the skin. You will never really be able to completely get rid of the oilyness. So if you are prone to this make sure you take a long your powder and blotting sheets just to make sure you can get rid of any shine quickly. (Quick Tip! If you can't afford expensive blotting sheets take a piece of 2 ply toilet tissue and rip it half and use that as your blotting sheet, thanks to Wayne Goss of Gossmakeupartist for this tip!)
